Let’s talk about obesity

Obesity is a chronic and incurable disease characterized by excessive body fat that affects the rest of the body’s organs and our health. Obesity is the lead cause of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, acute myocardial infarction, some types of cancer as well as other diseases.

Overweight and obesity have multiple causes:

GENETICS: 40% to 70% of obesity cases are due to genetics. The expression and interaction of some genes such as FTO and IRX3 are related to poor eating habits, increased appetite, and food intake, as well as increased body mass index and high body fat composition.

LACK OF ACTIVITY: it’s common to eat more calories than are used; this results in weight gain and is encouraged by sugar-sweetened beverages and high energy density fast food consumption, besides poor physical activity and prolonged fasting.

HABITS AND ENVIRONMENT: beliefs and practices, as well as other environmental and social factors, are related to obesity. For example, Mexican mothers and grandmothers associate high weight look in babies and children with good health. In addition, the average Mexican diet is high in saturated fat and low in fiber and protein.
